Matsuura MAM72-63V Repair
Sometimes we get offered a challenge, a rarely seen machine - a Matsuura MAM72-63V 5-axis multi-pallet changer with Siemens 840Di control coupled with Yaskawa drives (normally these machines are supplied with a Fanuc control).
The back story of this machine is that it hadn’t struck a blow for over 4 years, pretty much condemned by the OEM with quotes of over £30k to put it right. Prior to our visit, it had been worked on by eight different engineers and many hours had been spent on this machine without success. Our customer had decided to sell this £250k+ machine for scrap money. At a chance meeting, we were offered the opportunity to look at this machine with clear instructions, attend the site, assess it, and make a decision about whether we think it can be repaired.
We attended the site and within 4 hours, the machine was powered up and all axis’ jogging around. After replacing all of the batteries in the Yaskawa drives and Siemens HMI, we reloaded the NC data, the PLC data and all of the drive parameters. This then allowed us to run the spindle up, carry out repeatability tests and give the machine a clean bill of health. Our customer then instructed us to continue with the recommissioning, which involved resetting the spindle orientation, resetting the grid positions on all 5 axis’, aligning the tool matrix and carrier, along with the multi-pallet change system.
Once complete, all elements were backed up, along with a ghost image of the hard drive, effectively future-proofing the machine against further data loss. We ran the machine through dry cycles to thoroughly function test, once complete, our customer was able to cut parts on this machine for the first time in over 4 years. It was a pleasure to be involved in a project like this. We love a challenge, especially when others have failed before us. The ultimate reward was saving our customer several hundred thousand pounds in costs to replace this machine.
We’d like to give a massive shout-out to Andy Oakes CNC Services Ltd for their assistance on this one. It was a great collaboration with a fantastic result!

A common issue with Siemens 810D controls is the failure of CCU3 / CCU3.4.
Over time, dirt and coolant ingress cause component failure on the PCB, rendering your machine inoperable.

She has spent the day disassembling and reassembling a small spindle in the spindle workshop.
