Retro fitting a 4th axis to a Dugard Eco 1000 VMC
Today we retro-fitted a 4th axis to a Dugard Eco 1000 VMC with Siemens 828D control and Sinamics drives. This was not a straightforward task; this machine had never had a fourth axis and had absolutely no interface preparation whatsoever.
The 4th axis was a Detron with a non-drive cliq Heidenhain motor. Firstly, to allow the control to communicate and recognise the motor, a SMC20 module was fitted, all i/o wired to a military connector to the roof of the machine, as was an encoder to allow quick connection and disconnection. For when the 4th axis is not in use, a custom interface wiring harness was built to connect from sockets on the machine down to the Detron 4th axis unit.
Next the PLC on the machine was modified to interpret the clamp / unclamp signals correctly. The base firmware of the machine had to be updated to allow full operational functionality of the 4th axis, this included updating various machine data & option bits. Finally, after being fully function tested, a complete backup was made of the System CF Card, NC, PLC, HMI and drive data.
All of the work was carried out by Control CNC Services, as challenging as it was probably one of the most rewarding jobs we’ve ever completed, seeing it produce components makes the effort worthwhile.
We are Siemens specialists and keep a large stock of hardware and are also invested in repairing Siemens hardware where we can. Please contact us for further details.

This XYZ 1060 VMC had a very unusual fault. It initially started out with a Z-axis brake fault; when the emergency stop was engaged, the head fell under gravity and hit the dead stop.
