Complete Rebuild of a Hardinge VMC

Yet again, a Hardinge VMC lives to see another day! The customer had been suffering loads of problems with this machine, so much so that it hadn’t cut a component in over 6 months!

After diagnosis by us, along with other things, the spindle motor was found to be dead short across all three phases, which is worrying considering it had been “rebuilt” around 12 months ago by a well-known repair company!

It also had the wrong, ill-fitted (single-phase) fan cable tied to the back of it; as such, the wiring on the overload and contactor had been bodged to trick the machine.

We removed the motor and sent it directly to Siemens for inspection and overhaul; it was pretty much condemned, which resulted in a complete rebuild, new bearings, a new stator, a new encoder and new fan.
